Methodology
Every review on this site goes through three steps:
- Read the spec sheet honestly. We pull every published spec from the manufacturer — weights, dimensions, fabrics, ratings, temperature numbers, R-values — and decode what they actually mean for the trail. We don't rewrite marketing copy.
- Cross-check against the field. We cross-reference public trail reports, editorial reviews on outdoor sites (Outdoor Gear Lab, Switchback Travel, Section Hiker, Wirecutter, Outside, Backpacker), the relevant subreddits, and our own hands-on use where we have it. We name our sources and we don't invent quotes.
- Pick a winner — for whom. Every review names exactly who this is for and who should buy something else instead. Specific, opinionated, and falsifiable. No "best for everyone" cop-outs.
A note on customer reviews
We do not display, store, or summarize Amazon customer reviews or star ratings on this site, in keeping with the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement. The "field intelligence" we cite comes from public trail reports and editorial reviews on other outdoor sites — never from Amazon's own customer review corpus.
A note on how this site is paid for
Four Seasons Gear is reader-supported. When you click an Amazon link on our site and buy something — anything, not just the linked product — we earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. We never charge brands for placement, and a positive verdict is never for sale. If we recommend a product, it's because the spec sheet, the field reports, and the price all add up. If we wouldn't buy it ourselves, we say so.
